Chapter Twenty-one

You’re a Salty One, Graham Del Ray

Ember

GRAHAM’S HOUSE, DESPITE HIS many protests to the contrary, is perfect.

Crisp black shutters that pop against the white siding and match swoopy shingles on the slanted roof. Two rocking chairs swaying in the breeze on the porch, one of them with a tan throw blanket tossed over its back. A wooden front door and a screen door with elegant sconces on both sides, a cute mailbox tucked below the doorbell. Front steps that look newly redone with a brick path leading up to them flanked by thick green grass.

“It’s so cute,” I breathe, pressing my fingers into my cheeks. “Seriously. It’s adorable.”

It’s also nothing like the sleek city apartment I initially assumed he would have.

“I like it,” he says as a deflection. He pulls the key from the ignition and reaches for the door handle. “I’ll get your door. Just give me a sec.”

While he makes his way around the truck, I catalog little touches that must’ve been his doing. Neatly trimmed rose bushes with pink blooms in front of the porch, tall enough that the flowers have breathing room but not so tall they block the view. A tire swing hanging from the large oak tree in the front yard where he probably twirls his niece “around the world” like my brothers do with their kids. Pots of flowers rest on both sides of the stairs, a pop of color against the otherwise neutral house. Two chairs are neatly tucked under a small wooden table opposite the rockers, and I wonder if he works there sometimes.

I bet he sips black coffee from a plain white mug and rolls the sleeves of his hoodie down on chilly mornings. Maybe he goes shirtless on steamy mornings like this one, dark hair wild above his forehead while his brows slant in concentration. His pecs probably flex every time he jots down a note, handwriting almost as alluring as the way his abs—

I stop myself before I can let that thought go further, resisting the urge to fan myself with the book I brought along in my tote bag. The only thing that could convince me to stop reading this morning was Graham, but I had to bring it. I also have my Kindle, which means I practically have an entire world of books at my fingertips. All I need now is for Graham to slide a ring on my finger and profess his undying love to me so I can live in this cozy little house with my cozy little books and my grumpy, abs-flexing-while-he-works husband forever.

“Colton said he had to go into town for something, but he’ll probably be back soon.” Graham holds his hand out like he always does to help me down, his fingers closing carefully around mine. My skin reacts like
